Capacity building for Botswana: in-service training for professionals
In this unit we draw skills from International experts to Botswana through professional empowerment and capacity building. Norway and Canada have contributed largely to capacity building and empowerment. We work with different departments to explore training needs, and we link with International professional practitioners, as well as universities to support us with skills (through their lecturers, therapists, consultants, volunteers of all kinds and University students).
There is a huge shortage of professional skills to provide therapeutic and mental health interventions to the nation, yet the country is engulfed with multiple health, psychological and social problems that affect particularly children, youth, women and people with disability. There are very few psychologists and psychiatrists in the country. However, there is a good pool of social workers, teachers, nurses who if given special short training, can help bridge the gap. It is important that we use what we have in the country (available professional resources) to provide INSERVICE TRAINING, in order to give the best, we can to the people of Botswana. Ark and Mark Trust has a training unit that focuses on this. Do you want to share your professional skills with Botswana? :
*Training on trauma and grief therapy for adolescent orphans
We have trained 565 social workers and over 200 community volunteers on this program. All the district councils (government municipalities) implement this.
*Training on parenting and child development
RVTS WEST Norway, through Chiku Ali and Partrick O’Loughling has trained 66 facilitators on parenting using the International Child development program. Over 800 parents and 2400 children have benefited from this program. RVTS has trained the Ark and Mark Team of professionals into Trainer of Trainers for the ICDP program. This will help the program and its implementation to speedily roll out and be replicated to the rest of the country. We are thankful for such support!!
*Training on therapy for sexually abused children – and music therapy
RVTS WEST Norway through Inge Nordhaug, a specialist in child sexual abuse, and Helse Førde, through their Music therapist Gunn Karoline Fugle have trained 50 Social Workers on therapy for sexually abused children. They took 5 of these through practical training at Ark Adventures Campsite (Many social workers are waiting to be trained on this. We hope to roll out the program further from 2021).
*Refresher course training on research
Dalhousie University, University of Bergen and Western Norway University of Applied Sciences partnered with us on a national research project. They offered us refresher course training on doing Qualitative and Quantitative research; data collection, data imputing, data analysis using current scientific computer programs like NViVo software, SPSS software and others. This strengthened our research unit. We are experts skilled in managing data, keeping in touch with the international research experts and developing quality reports to donors as well as co-authoring journal publications with these experts.
